2026-w20 Paint
This week note sorta covers the last two weeks. A tad longer!
The word that sums up this week is: paint. We paid a friend to come and paint our hall/stairs/landing plus a kid’s room and the living room. The setup, decisions, marking out, and putting back have dominated quite a bit of this week. It was pretty disruptive (to be expected) which dredged up low level trauma feelings from the house extension; thankfully, short lasting. In the end, it is great to feel we’ve finally caught up on the decorating, despite a few things still outstanding. And the colours look great.
A top moment for me was lying on the couch with my son, watching the clouds and listening to music. Something I’m looking forward to next week is taking two days off to do a few things for myself.
A quote from today:
The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshipers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.” C.S. Lewis from The Weight of Glory
Headlines
May w/c 2026-05-11 and the week before
Understanding. I learned about the Gemini Protocol, which seems really fun. I tried getting an account with the Midnight Pub and another site but so far I have been ignored :-(. Learning through some counselling about how practicing emotional regulation tools may just be what I desperately need to stay the course on my current shitty difficult project; that and seeing how helpful it is to have face time with my immediate seniors, despite involving a 1.5 hr train ride.
Creating & cultivating. I rekindled some old interest in Ubuntu, finally figuring out how to override protections on an old laptop to replace Windows 10 with it: now the family TV. Some fun putting up photos on the newly painted walls: great chance to display some of my recently developed 35mm rolls. Tweaking my todo & plaintext calendar (will share the template in a future post).
Consuming. Obsidian themes. Blogs! I finished Wheel of Time 9, this one had a great ending but it was a slog to get there. Enjoying honey. Clips from Band of Brothers. A new Galen Leather pocket Traveller’s Notebook style cover to use as a combo pocket notebook and wallet.
Connecting. Some friends round after Church today for a meal and chat. Last weekend, a visit from my wife's university friend. My line managers year anniversary meal out at a nice pub, good food!. Helped my brother move house.
Pen & ink combo: Faber Castell Loom with 🟦 Sailor Potsu Potsu.
For my future self. I need to practice emotional regulation tools to stay the course
